Typography as Temperature Control

Viewing the cold, black ink on bleached bright, white paper doesn't exactly translate a playful environment at first glance.  I'd agree it offers neutrality to material aspects of the writing but this neutrality, this coldness, doesn't it permeate into the writing in some way?  Does it in turn make the writing cold?  Is it temperature?  Is it metaphor?  Typography and material considerations become flavors, or seasonings, or accents, or are they the cooking process and the writing is the ingredients?
